You can try and tie the two pieces back together with soft elastic material (thats if it was split)
Otherwise, just clean the wounded area of loose debris and allow mother nature to take over.
Oh, I've learned that prayer works on trees, too.

I had a dogwood tree that was broken in a storm. I cut all the branches above the broken part then cut the trunk to just below the broken part. It left a trunk about 5' tall. Removed all the broken parts of the tree. During the next spring it started sprouting small branches from the top of the trunk. I pruned all the branches that were growing crooked or into each other & left an open frame work for them to grow. It's been 2 yrs & the tree is doing fairly well now. Hope this helps you.

What you've finished so a options is magnificent. be certain the fix is sound by accessible including a stiffener to the joint. Apple and pear timber are very hardy and could wade through some damage. a really demanding pruning now after which will do no damage.

it might be better to cut it down. a good tree man can tell you if it is salvageable. we had lightning hit a tree, when we finally got it down, the treeman showed us how rotted the inside was.
