I came across the startling figure of 24% of adults in my home county describe themselves as 'disabled'. That is they are unable to work and draw a gov't subsistance check. The population here is almost 100% native. That is no recent immigrants. I always remember this stat when I hear these same people complain about the immigrant Mexicans, other Latinos, Asians, I see scraping out a living doing real work.

Another way to put this question is: If a 100 Americans were called and asked "Do you consider yourself disabled" how many would say 'yes'.

When we lived in a town in West Virginia for a while, statistics showed that 60% of them were on disability. Yet you would see them at the creeks fishing, or in the woods hunting, or at the bowling alley bowling! So sad!

What is your source of information? What is the definition of disabled that people used to classify themselves. How long are these people on average on disability?

"More than three-quarters (77.4%) of Americans age
22 to 64 with disabilities do not receive public assistance"
-- from a google search on the internet
