in my opinion, it will never be considered a real sport like the big 4 ( baseball, basketball, football and hockey). It is just to slow, boring and no action. Not too mention the..welll//uhhh..you know.... any thoughts, will it ever reach the status it has in other countries. keepings in mind them countries also have no other sports to watch( oh yeah cricket lmao)

No.

But some dude mentioned cricket. I'm sorry but outside of India who cares about cricket? (OK so Australia is big on cricket and so is England, but really.) Funny but I can't find India anywhere near this year's World Cup tournament unless they're there taking notes. Has India ever qualified for a World Cup Tournament? Do you guys even have a team? Wow! I guess you do! India is currently ranked 117th in the world out of 208 countries. The only time that India qualified for a World Cup was in 1950--and that's because their scheduled opponents had to withdraw so they qualified by default. So how did this soccer power dynamo do in the 1950 tournament? I'm so glad you asked. Several of their players refused to wear soccer boot/shoes (I guess shoes were not required in their soccer leagues, I don't know.) So they withdrew from the World Cup. Talk about sucking! Ooh but watch out for that Indian cricket team, they just beat Sri Lanka, Singapore, Pakistan, and Andorra. Yes those very bastions of world sports. Yes, those world sports super powers.

As long as there is no big money to be made in American soccer, it will always lag behind the big three, NFL, NBA, and MLB. The NHL is not as popular but it's more popular than soccer. So while the rest of planet Earth waits for the World Cup final on 07/09/2006, most Americans will be counting down the days for the next episode of The Sopranos or American Idol!

Some of these respondents are funny. "Never" is a very long time. I think most people who have any idea about what they're talking about think that the US, China and any other populous nations where soccer is growing in popularity have an excellent chance to win someday. I'm sure the people who say the US will never win are many of the same people who were stunned out of their minds when the US made the final 8 in 2002, and probably would have never given the US U-20 team a chance to beat Brazil in an U-20 World Cup. Still, it may be a long wait. You have to be both lucky and good, and the US squad is still not consistently among the top 10 in the world.

I think it will maybe not ever overtake football or basketball but it could become a big sport. TV rating for this years cup are higher than ever. MLS now is supported by an infrastructure of soccer only stadiums, that can be smaller and sell out creating a better environment. Owner are becoming more passionate about their teams as can be shown by the building of new stadiums and the tossing of money at bigger name players. Big name players will be here. Beckham will come to LA, Mcmanaman, Davids, Ronaldo, RIvaldo, Borgetti, Okocha, all might come to MLS. Not to mentions, nmae dropping of Zidane Roy Keane and some other EPL footballers. Soccer is slowly progressing and growing here....

As a European, I hope you're right, I pray football never takes off in the US. You can rule the World Series and other national events (lol) in baseball, basketball, hockey and that thing with quarterbacks and cheerleaders. But please, if you can't play a game the entire world can play, don't bother. It does make things more tedious. You ruined cycling with your dope-fuelled robot, you bored me stiff with the football against Ghana, Italy and the Czech Republic - and even ice hockey freezes over when the US take part. Don't get me wrong, watch or do any sport you like and I wish you lots of fun with it - but stay away from the international stage. No one really wants you there.
Oh PS we do have other sports to watch - and I'm thankful the US haven't sofar blemished volleyball, rugby and marathon. Cheers!

I hope it never does because people like you do not deserve to have a great sport like soccer..
Soccer is boring??? Really??? Can I get a hit of what you are smoking???

If any sport is boring is baseball and American football...
Yeah let me run with the ball INTO the opposing team even though mu intention is to run with the ball into the opposing teams goal area..
Or let me stand and wait for someone to throw a ball and try to hit it

to poster DaCowMan.. what do you know about soccer???
most likely nothing

I don't know what you mean by no action. You mean no action the way all the action is stopped on all four sports you mention above for 200 McDonald's commercials, or time outs, halftime raffle contests, or cheerleaders, or some idiot asking his girlfriend "would you marry me", etc. etc. etc. Remember that most countries consider soccer their national sport and is the most popular. You are in the minority. Is not that soccer is not catching up in US, but Americans who cant catch with soccer.

yes, it will NEVER EVER be as big as the big 4. but soccer may take off in the U.S.
i think the reason it isn't is because there aren't that many good American soccer players. also i think that most americans are embarrassed by how the U.S. soccer team played in Germany. i think it will only take off if they actually get somewhere in the World Cup and has good management and leadership.
but there are alot of youth and adult soccer teams everywhere in the country. in a way, it has. soccer members in this country are growing and growing.

I think it would if the USA could make it past the round of 8 maybe.

Also, it needs some rule changes. I love watching this World Cup but the diving and crying from a simple fall is killing me!
