Affirmative action has morphed and changed over the years. Initially, it entailed organizations, corporations, institutions, universities, etc., taking steps to diversify, hiring/including/accepting more people of all races, genders, sexualities, and that sort of thing. (That is, attention was focused on making the environment more inclusive, instead of "overrun" with white men.) Over the years, controversy developed, because people began thinking that affirmative action was unjust because it gave preference to ethnic minorities, women, et al. Some places stopped the practice of affirmative action, while some have retained it, though in a different form. See the link below for a more comprehensive discussion.

giving a person a job or position not because they are the most qualified, but due to race or cultural background and having a quota placed on the employer for having a specific number of those individuals on the payroll.

I don't think jobs should be handed out based on color but I sure as heck do think that people should know how to speak English correctly and not have a thick accent of any kind. It is irritating.

It was a program started to give more minorities more chances at jobs. Sort of a quota of a certain amount of each race so a company or business doesn't look discriminatory.

Its a way for unqualified women, blacks and mexicans to try to compete with white men. Its racist and sexist ( Clinton said that was OK,sometimes, though). Anyone who takes advantage of it, or encourages their children to do so, is a racist.
Laws favoring whites, in times past, were called Jim Crowe laws.
