can you go to a local advice centre to go through your financial situation with them? you have to be very careful about following advice about benefits from people who don't have the full picture, for example you might be able to get help to pay the mortgage but HOUSING BENEFITS will not pay for a mortgage, only for rent. you're probably better off living in your house, if you can. if you own 1/2 a house which you're not living in, that also could prevent you claiming most benefits (as you'd be seen as being "too well off"). maybe you could switch your mortgage to interest only or something cheaper which you could afford?

My parents tought me social benefits and handouts from the government are for those who need it and not someting that should be abused.

I don't know your situation but I would do whatever I could do be independent and not having to rely on others to pay for me. Of course the father should pay child support and continue paying his share of their upbringing.

Be very careful when you decide what to do about the house. Talk to a lawyer and your bank and anyone who is willing to help you out but read all the fine print and get a professional to advice you. It might cost a bit of money but could save you from a lot of worries in the future.

If the house you already live in isn't too big for you and you want to live there, I'm sure there are ways to refinance the morgage.

Good luck to you

Been there, done that.
I did not think I could handle it either. I checked into refinancing , which has to be done and found my mortgage is more affordable then a rental.
I used a place called American Lending if that helps and they were great.
It doesn't cost a penny to check it out.
You can find them on line.
I did everything on line and over the phone until the actual closing which was done locally.
They did everything for me.
Good luck and check it out before you decide.
And don't forget to make sure your husband pays child support.
That will help with the bills.

Is the mortgage payment more than your house payment? Sometimes it is better to refinance the house, buy him out and pay off any debt you may have. That way you are still in your house, you own it and you get a fresh start financially. Just a thought.

something you need to address with the ex. since you're both on the mortgage you can't up and leave or sell the house without his authorization as well. you stop paying your mortgage, it'll damage your and your ex's credit severely. best bet is sell the house and refinance the mortgage and acquire another cheaper house or condo for the tim being. you might want to talk with your lawyer about how to handle this matter.

Before you move out, see the Citizens Advice Bureau; they are marvellous and can give you free legal advice and tell you all the do's and donts, plus advise on claiming benefits, housing benefit, council tax benefit etc. Dont move out without this advice, or you could loose out. Good luck

Yes i think so. I know of someone who still lives in the family home with her kids and she receives financial support because her husband left her. So you may still get financial support without having to rent. I would phone the council and ask them before you make the decision to rent.

You need to sell the house and hopefully you get enough back from the sell to be able to move on. Alimony and child support should really be able to help you out financially a lot. Things will be different now so be cautious financially from now on.
