Because they make us feel happy and safe. Why do we believe in Santa when we are kids? Because we´re innocent, or because deep down, we know, this is great, it´s magical, it´s meant to keep us happy. We feel safe when we do not have to question things, when we do not have to look horrid truths in the eye and in the end, while we know, that what we embrace are lies, we comfort ourselves with the knowledge that truths would not be better, they would not change a thing for us.

At age 20, I realized Americans prefer lies than truth. Ever since I have lived very uneasily with that fact.
It makes me seem eccentric/odd - but I never tell the truth about why I behave as I do. No one will believe me - I figure tit for tat is warranted!

A truth, by definition, cannot be a lie. Do you mean lies that are believed to be true?
