Actually, my mom is a teacher too. If we're not relaxing, we normally work around town. Perhaps your mom would like working part time at a local grocery store as a cashier. Or maybe working in a local mall. You mom also may want to trying opting for a summer allotment next year. That means that in the 10 months she works they take out a little each check in order to supplement the summer months with no break in pay. My mom and I take advantage of this option every year, so if we want to relax in the summer, we don't worry about it.

Teachers make great tour guides.

You didn't say where you were but, if its in (or she could temporarily relocate to) an area with tourism in summer, your mother would probably get a temporary job that she would really enjoy (considering that it would be a change from dealing with little people, teachers are generally social and sociable type people, and they have all the right skills for entertaining and educating short-timers). Also, depending on where and what her duties are, and what kind of tips she can garner, it can be quite lucrative.

I work at a theater camp. I know other teachers who work at similar types of summer programs. Bookstores are good and museums are often looking for additional folks to work during the summer (and an education background can't hurt!).

Temp agencies usually look for seasonal help this time of year. This summer I'm tutoring. In the past, I've worked in the hospitality field... a tour guide at a vacation spot is fun because it gives the opportunity for travel, room and board is paid, and it provides a nice change of pace.

If your mom does not want to work summer school, she can check into various learning centers (Sylvan, Huntington, etc.) to work part time tutoring students in various subjects.

How about a part time camp position? Many camp (YMCA) like to have a certified teacher on staff to plan creative projects.

I have always supplemented my summers with tutoring students from my school.

I tutor, you can also work at summer school programs, camps, college summer programs....also some schools allow you to write curriculum over the summer (exciting!).
I also know in my state (Mass) you can help the department of education score standardized tests (also exciting! but pays well).

I have a great idea for teachers to make some extra money in the summer that I can share with you privately. Write to Bruce at boatclub@go.com . Remind me that you are helping your mom. I will send back my idea for you to share with her.
