It's gotten a bit better, but it used to be that the mainstream (in the U.S. and most of Europe) was pretty much exclusively white. History books, politicians, actors, models in magazines, beauty contests, etc. -- what you saw and read in the media and at school were mostly caucasian or about caucasians. So Black History Month was started as a way of making room to talk about the experiences of black people in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Think about most beauty magazines today -- how many make-up, hair-care or even fashion articles are relevant to people with darker skin or different hair? What I've seen is at most a page or two. Doesn't it make sense that black and Hispanic women would prefer something that is more relevant?
Maybe someday we'll get to a place where education and media coverage is so evenly balanced that it makes sense to have a Caucasian heritage month alongside the others, but we have a long long way to go.

Not to be sounding like a racist, but me being an asian male, I think it's because most of the magazines and celebration are already geared toward caucasians because they're marketed toward caucasian, the majority, and not the minority race. Even though all the minorities outnumber the majority, but the caucasians still outnumber a single minority race. If a magazine like Ebony comes out, it's already labeled black and most rednecks wouldn't buy it. Just like Asian magazines, I bet most asians would buy it, but not the other races. We may tolerate other races, but I highly doubt that we go out embracing the other races. In society, we hang with our own clicks, once in a while, there's a stray like me. I don't know about you, but I dig white chicks more than any other race. Kristen Bell is HOT! :)

That's about right. There doesn't seem to be a lot of talk about reverse descrimination, does there. There's also the NAACP and LULAC but white folks don't have the right to have organizations for the advancement of other white folks and if they do they get knocked about in the media. It's always easier to point the finger at someone else and say this is the reason why we have problems in society rather than take responsibility, and it was no different during the civil rights movement, or the women's movement, or any other movement. The focus is more on why somebody else is putting us down rather than attaining true equality for all races and creeds. I can't blame another race for my screw ups. Then again, I tend to learn from my mistakes as well. Good luck sorting all that out in your head.

I think its because in general these certain minorities have to have their own identities. I think its more about being about your culture. I think caucasion can have their own too but maybe the effort is not being put out there. And maybe cause Caucasion is such a broad ethnicity...Caucasions can be from many different places. I dont think I would see it as being racist if I saw Germany Month or Polish Month...I guess people may think of it racist because when people say they are all about being "white" they may think of the arian race. I could be wrong but this is just what comes to mind.

you already have those things,,,,didnt u know that?...
whites also have Ms. America or Ms. United States or whatever
you have the Cosmo girl, vogue magazine etc, ...and every month on this planet has some holiday that is not an ethnic holiday such as presidents day, fourth of july, halloween, valentines day...just about something in every month...
so why are you hating on the few bread crumbs that we get.....we as human beings are still not equal..there is inequality in everything..from the moment that minorities are born we are bombarded with all kinds of racism ..we hear "white is right"..either directly or indirectly in our lives all the time...
do YOU know how hard is growing up as a minority, going to college and being looked down upon by your white teachers and classmates simply because your skin tone is a tad bit darker than there's?......no you have NO CLUE....
do you know how hard it was to get such things such as MISS BLACK AMERICA, EBONY MAGAZINE, BLACK HISTORY MONTH, OR HISPANIC HERITAGE?...it took DECADES upon DECADES...why?..because WHITE AMERICA..did not want it..
why can we not be proud of our heritage like white america is proud of theirs?...why should we not?..
its not being racist ..its struggling for an equality that will never happened in AMERICA...so before you ask another question why dont you try and WALK A MILE IN A MINORITY SHOES...then think about the question you ask and you will see why.......but of course you can't contemplate that idea ..right....of course not your white...what else could anyone possibly need in america right?...i dont blame you for asking the question because as you said ,..it IS uneducated....
america is so sad ..so sad...

Because most of the whites who could complain about it are so secure in their own skins that they don't give a rat's as* about it!
And yes, it is racist that the beauty contest is limited to blacks.
WASP Americans don't need a special day or month set aside, the whole year (other than Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage) belongs to everyone else, and , good News , blacks are part of 'everyone'! Yes, some blacks are racist!

Good question? White Heritage month even sounds racist just because you where raised being told that white people owned slaves and all that sort of stuff. probably makes it sound like a bad thing to celebrate our heritage but there's very few ethnicity's who at one time where not marked by these sorts of things why don't you present it or right your Governor. It's not a bad idea just a fragile one . I think if some one went about it the right way it would be great.

I would say that it is because caucasion race dominates the Miss America pagent and the media. Which is sad, so the African-American community, rightfully so, wants to celebrate their beauty and their culture because they don't find that they get the same recognition in the main-stream. In terms of the months, those are for rememberance and set aside so that everyone can take some time to think about diversity and have respect for people of different races/cultures.

It definitely wouldn't be considered racist, are you serious!?!?! What is Cosmo, Elle girl magazine, Jane, and so forth? Aren't those magazines guiled towards white women? I never look at them as racist. And you shouldn't either. Stop acting like you're being discriminated against. Why can't black women have their own magazines just as white women do? I was about to pick you as my best answer until I read this...not like you care but damn, come on lady!!

It's a way for them to voluntarily segregate themselves from everyone else. Seems odd doesn't it? They had strong leaders who fought for the right to be treated the same and now they don't want it. I wonder what MLK would think about the situation today.
EDIT: Isn't it interesting that so many people feel that it is ok to be racist with this answer (see Marcus R.)? Would they feel so inclined if the races were reversed?
