If movie actors looked as plain as others, they'd have to rely on their talents alone. And let's face it, a lot of them would be out of a job then.

Make-up is applied because of lighting issues. Some people have very oily skin which would blind the viewer if they didn't put some make-up on. Others have very dry skin that comes out very badly on film. As someone else said, some actors are just ugly and need all the help they can get!

Everyone wants to see someone who looks great when they are in the hospital, just waking up in the morning, or doing any routine thing. If the people on tv looked like those us in real life, we wouldn't watch. ALso, I have heard that you have to wear some makeup on tv because of the cameras and lights

The lighting needed in order for the image to show up on video... or even film... is so harsh that people look incredibly washed out without it. this is a lesson Nixon learned during the debates with John Kennedy, who looked tanned and smooth. Nixon looked pale and haggard.
It also is used to even out complexions and "correct" "flaws" on a person's face which would otherwise distract, such as incredibly dark circles under the eyes or rosacea or gin blossoms. Of course, as you say, it does occasionally look more like make-up and that is distracting as well.

Becuase of the issue of lighting and also some of these people really look terrible without the make-up, they don't want to have to face that or they won't get much of an audience for there shows.

I think it is a great. idea. so you should start doing it, producing movies and tv shows without using makeup. the conventional wisdom is that under the harsh lights, it washes out a person's features....but i'm with you.
