There is no way you can actually make your volume louder than it is. Although if you are hardly able to hear it, you can contact Apple manufacturers inc. again as there might definitely be some problem with your IPOD or the headphones.

It may be the way that you downloaded the song. You can also set the maximum volume. Check this out.
Select Settings > Volume Limit.
The volume control shows the current volume.
Use the Click Wheel to select the maximum volume.
You can press Play to hear the currently selected song play while you select the maximum volume limit.
Press the Center button to set the maximum volume limit.
A triangle on the volume bar indicates the maximum volume limit

With your Nano attached to your computer and Itunes open highlight all the songs on your ipod and under Edit click Preferences there is tab marked playback (I think) in the window you just opened. There you can adjust individual song volume up or down. Really useful as some recordings are very quiet.

check the volume controll and see if is not on min volume instead of max.

if it is that'swhy you will hear the amount of volume you switched to.

or if you did that then get new ipod headphones or some other types.

its probably soemthing wrong with the headphones. try using different headphones
