Pick a size bike, then pick a brand.

Cheep price = No value later on.

Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, they all make affordable bike, all need maintaince, most get the same amount of gas milage, the EFI, injected models are the lowest maint on the market.

A 4 cyl is always the best.

If you drive them right they will last forever.

I hightly recommend a Goldwing 1200 for dependability
But for fuel mileage the smaller the better

Something like a Honda Rebel for a small in town cruiser or a 250 ninja

For open road use at least a 500 Vulcan would be very good and the fuel mileage would be close to 60mpg or more
I operate an 800 Vulcan and get 63 mpg

Harleys are nice but don't expect them to out last a JAP bike..
And the fuel mileage isn't really that good to brag about
Sorry Harley Fans

New rider? Start with something like a Ninja 250. Master this bike and it will help you become a great rider. They're cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and get 65 miles per gallon. Fine for the freeway, perfect for around town and a blast to ride in the twisties.

If you're trying to save money, go with a bike under 500ccs. Japanese motorcycles are the easiest and cheapest to maintain. European bikes and twins are way cool, but they require more maintenance and are more expensive to repair. Save them for later! Good luck.
