Thank you for those who have so quickly answered. This is a trivia question that a professor posed to me... I consder the source when I say that it has not always been measured in feet. I have researched quite a bit and am stumped. I look foward to finding the answer.

Ok.... the use of feet and inches was established (and used) before the the game of baseball was played.... no brainer there. Baseball has not always been the nation's past time and a lesser known game that used another form of measurement.
I do look forward to a response that will actually answer my question and not explain how long feet have been used.
Thank you in advance.

As far as I know, baseball has always been played for the most part by people who have the use of their feet. Sure, some disabled people play as well, but that probably doesn't have anything to do with the mesure of the distance to the wall from the plate.

Huh???? Feet and inches have always been standard units f length measurements in thew United States... The 60'6" from the pitcher's rubber to home plate is due to someone not being able to read poor handwriting...but that is another story for another time....

The system of measuring with feet was in effect before baseball was invented.
