It would help if you tell us what you need it for - are you into gaming or just casual computing. If you are into gaming than are you considering an SLi or a Crossfire motherboard or are you just looking for a normal one. Most newer graphic cards requires you to have a PCI-e slot rather than the old AGP slots.
If you are looking for SLi/Crossfire boards, try the following:-
1) MSI MS-7160SLI (Intel socket 775)
2) MSI MS-7194FI ATI (Intel socket 775)
3) ABIT KN8 SLI NF4 (AMD socket 939/940)
4) ASUS A8R-MVP ATI (AMD socket 939/940)
If you are not using SLi or Crossfire, than try the ones listed below:-
1) ABIT AW8-MAX (Intel socket 775)
2) MSI MS-7140P (Intel socket 775)
3) ABIT KN8 ULTRA NF4 (AMD socket 939/940)
4) MSI MS-7220 K8N Diamond (AMD socket 939/940)
Please bear in mind that these boards listed are more suitable for those who require performance and also reliability - hence they may be on the high-end side...
Hope this helps...

Intel D945PVS is what I have it is the most versitile can support celeron, P4, Pd 800 series, Pd 900 series, LGA775 socket,
The Intel D955XBK is good and will also support extreme edition processors but that processor is close to $900 alone
The Intel D975XBX is the ultimate mobo and also supports extreme edition processors
Unless you plan on getting an extreme edition processor the D945PVS or any other 945 chipset mobo is the best

The question is do you want AMD or Intel then I can suggest a motherboard. In the meantime decide for yourself by checking out the reviews over here, http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125195,00.asp
Those are the best motherboards that exist for AMD or Intel.
