It depends on what you like. If you want to relax, then go to Goa, with it's beautiful beaches, and great quality of life. If you want to see tourist sites, I would include Agra, for the Taj Mahal. Finally, if you just want to experiecne life in India, Mumbai is a great choice.

I think you should visit Kashmir.... i was there a week ago and trust me it is truly Heaven on Earth!
Srinagar has become i a little polluted over the years but living in the houseboats is just an amazing experience....but they are really clustered so i suggest to get one which is in a peaceful area n has a great view.... i think the houseboat called the "new minivet" ...
And as for the rest of Kashmir... Gulmarg is a beautiful place and right now being spring time all the hills will be full of flowers...you see, the word Gul in hindi means Flowers and Marg means district(and its a ski resort in winter)...
And then theres Pahalgam, yet another beautiful place with the River Jhelum flowing through the town, ....you can also go white water rafting and theres also a 9-hole golf course there...
tghen theres Yousmarg close to Srinagar... rolling hills and trees and the river...its just brilliant...
And don't worry about the terrorism part of it there's nothing.....the media i dunno whats wrong with them they are all just rumours... When i was in pahalgam there was a rumour all over the country that there was a bomb blast but nothing had happened.... so chill! :P
Have a nice holiday

For first ever visit to India, I suggest you to move around in you city of landing whether Delhi or Mumbai etc. and plan your visit to the places of tourist interest in that region only. Don't make a hectic tour. Visit country side and places of your interest in the region as your time and budget permits.
Don't look for cheap places to stay/eat but you may look for economic avenues if not very comfortable and luxurious. Avoid areas of Paharganj in Delhi to stay as you may be getting recommendations by certain set people in their stereotype messages. India is a very beautiful country to explore, far beyond congested and crowded streets of Paharganj in Delhi, an old city area burdened on the available infrastructure, just for savings of petty amounts.
Stay for a couple of less days but make a quality trip and enjoyable too.

You may want to include Agra, for they say your visit to India is not complete if you do not see Taj Mahal
