I don't like the answer from the guy before me (the whole soap-operas vs. mythology thing) Marvel characters are really interesting, but theres soooo many new ones who just say "Okay, let's get a cool backstory... hm... Oh! How about 'Hes a MUTANT' !? That's original!". This is the only part about Marvel characters that I don't like. Really, though, that's only with the new characters. The originals (Hulk, Spiderman, Daredevil, Dr.Strange, etc.) have great backstories. DC has great stories, but I find they reflect too much from the writers view. They don't follow the character's beliefs too much, and mold the character to fit their own tastes. Thats why, personally, I'm a Marvel fan. (Bu I think too many people here have said they like Marvel only because of the movies.)

Well, the DC heroes were that way, generally, because they were special. Superman was an alien, Batman was a millionaire genius with issues, Wonder Woman was an Amazon princess ... pretty much because they were BORN that way.
Marvel heroes, on the other hand, were mostly made, not born. Spider bite or build a suit of iron armor or experiment with Gamma Rays or make a deal with the Devil, or something.
Also, Marvel heroes seem to deal with their "difference" in a more human way. Superman seldom mopes about being the only Kryptonian on a planet of (by his standards) subnormal cripples. But Spiderman is constantly agonizing over the conflicts his powers cause him. Even Prince Namor is pretty moody (unlike Aquaman, who is just an enviro-nazi these days).
So, I guess the short answer is "Make Mine Marvel."

dc has better all around heroes. they seem to be more powerful and less specialized. they are also more iconic and stay more true to the philosophical questions of power. but marvel characters are more human and personal. they are far more easy to relate to and have story lines that are also easier to understand. dc is like mythology, and marvel is like daytime soaps. so, do you want to study ancient myth, or watch an on going drama? the better heroes are up to the reader.

marvel.

I would like to see writers from marvel play with the dc hero stories. That would be interesting. Like Superman and Batman going to a nightclub and letting loose.

I noticed, even as a kid, that Marvel would play with the story lines to break the monotony, while dc always kept it serious (Yawn).

Marvel by far! That does not mean that the clasics from D.C. are not bad either (eg. Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, etc.).
