Red is Live. Black is Neutral. Green and Yellow are Earth.

Look for L, N or E markings on the plug. Earth is usually in the middle.

In the UK the old colours are
Red is Live,
Black is neutral
and more often than not the earth has green tape on it but may be bare.

In a very new house the colours may be
Brown Live
Blue Neutral
Green/yellow earth this may be sleeving over the bare conductor or taped again or may be unsleeved.

In all cases make sure all terminals are secured tightly as a loose connection may cause the cable to overheat and cause a fire.

Also make sure that all power to the sockerts are off before attempting to connect them, you never know if somebody has replaced the fuse unknown to you .

Shouldn't do this yourself but, if you must look at another one and see how it's wired.
