Too damn many in my opinion.
It wouldn't be so bad, if they weren't so downright cruel and disgusting. ( The slaughter houses ). Flipping a cow upside and slitting it's throat, while it's still alive mind you... then ripping it's trachea out, and throwing it on the floor, then dumping the still ALIVE cow onto the ground in a mixture of feces and blood from other cows, and letting it die from fear, shock, and from a slit neck. Painful. Anyone who is a slaughterer, must have no heart whatsoever. I've always said anyone that can hurt an animal could hurt or kills a human. It doesn't matter that these people have to make a living too. If you have to, just kill the damn animal, and get the meat off of it, and move on.. There's no since in slitting it's throat and letting it moan in agony and pain. Chickens, have their beaks snipped off all the way up to their faces. Those beaks are filled with nerve endings, just like one of our fingers. It makes eating almost impossible, and they say, it's because the become aggressive. yeah I believe I would too, if you put me in a pen, in 100 degree weather, with 5,000 of my own species, and I was walking in my own excrement and others, and was not given food or water...and was injected with all kinds of crap to plumpen me up. They get so fat and un-necessarily heavy from all the drugs they inject in them, that their legs can't withstand the weight, and a lot of them have broken legs. Not only that, they also get their necks slit upside now, and kick and move around until they take their last breath. They stay in a cage, that's not big enough to even move backwards. They eat, sleep and poop there. EVen tho they are animals, they still deserve the same rights as a human being does, it's un necessary to beat, abuse or bludgeon an animal. Just shoot it, and get it over with.
we don't need meat to survive. we don't need dairy to continue living. There are sources of protein everywhere. And atleast if you're gonna eat meat, should it be such a violent death to these animals?

how can you not call it killing?
they are living creatures...perhaps you were bred for the purpose of being an insensitive self absorbed moron
read this and then go enjoy your big mac:
Once cows make their market weight they are sent to an auction, which leads them most often to a slaughterhouse. Cattle raised for beef are born in one state, fattened in another, and slaughtered in yet another. During transportation, cattle are crowded into metal trucks where they suffer from fear, injury, temperature extremes, and lack of food, water and veterinary care (PETA).
At the slaughter house cows are brought on the kill floor and are shot in the forehead at close range. Typically it only takes one shot to kill the animal, but occasionally a second shot is needed. Once dead, a chain is wrapped around the left hind hoof, and the body is mechanically lifted until the head is about a foot off the floor. The “skinning out the head” process begins by cutting away the skin from the sides of his head, over the animal’s eyes, and around the animal’s horns. The ears are removed with a straight knife. The head is bent back, and the Adam’s apple and the first cervical vertebra are cut through. The mandibular glad, near the lower jaw is removed and examined, and then the cheeks are cut and checked for cysts and parasites. The cheek flesh normally throbs as the muscles are still contracting, and finally the tongue is removed

It's actually not cows that are killed mostly, it is steers and heifers. Cows are mature bovine that have given birth. Though all the "information" from PETA may seem great that doesn't really answer the question at hand. For the others who have posted about PETA I hope that you don't do any of the following: own pets, eat any kind of animal products including milk and eggs, or take pretty much any medicine.
The USDA (United State's department of Agiculture) has very good stastics that will actually answer your question. If you visit the following website you can find the stastics you are looking for. The amount of cattle harvested varies by day and season.
Also, I have been to a packing plant, which I'm sure the others posting about PETA have not. It is not as bad as PETA makes it sound. PETA often gets its members hired to work in plants and then they themselves abuse animals just to shot their videos. PETA has members that are considered terrorist for their horrific acts against places and people.

Not many. Mostly it's just the steers. And you couldn't call it killing....they were bred for this purpose.
