aww that is so cute that your dog found the turtle. If it is black and yellow maybe it is a painter, but it it has long claws and it has kindof spikes on its back, with a pointed nose then it could be a snapper.

is its mouth pointed like a beak? if not its a common turtle, do a picture web search for turtles and i'll bet a pic will come up. they can bite but usually just hide in there shells until you go away. a snapping turtle on the other hand will almost certainly bite and it hurts so keep your fingers away and your dog's nose.
