My father-in-law sent this link to me. Is that all it takes? Or will the amendment have to go before some other people first?

It's funny. Most of the answer to this question have been opinions and/or false information. Kind of sad.

What would it take for a federal law requiring all federal laws and regulations to be written only in English? A simple majority vote of both chambers of Congress, and a presidential signature. Same as any law. Why? Because this only affects the procedure by which laws and regulations are propagated, and it's within Congressional authority.

What would it take to pass a federal law requiring all state laws and regulations to be written only in English? Can't be done. The federal government is not allowed to directly order state legislatures to act a certain way.

So, what would it take to require all state/local laws and regulations to be written only in English? A Constitutional Amendment, passed by a 2/3 majority of both chambers, plus three-quarters of the state legislatures (or appropriate constitutional conventions).

What would it take to prohibit the speaking of any other language inside US borders? A constitutional amendment, followed by a massive police effort, and then winning the civil war that would likely result. I'd bet anything that even if some state says it's illegal to speak any other language, that law is never enforced, because it would be a constitutional violation to do so. That was ruled on by the US Supreme Court back around 1918.

Yes English is the official language of the land, however it should've never been passed as an amend.. This country was founded on English speaking ppl, the LEGAL Immigrants also made sure to speak ENGLISH when they arrived here. Those immigrants who passed through Ellis Island even learned the Language I don't understand why the Hispanics cant seem to speak English or won't although many other ppl. around the world have no problem learning English it if they ever visit or live in the USA!

As I recall Congress voted on this years ago, and english is the official language. And for those of you that think a dual language is the answer, what about the next group of imigrants, do you plan to just change the second language everytime a new group of imigrants comes to our shores? I don't think so. There is a law in the state of Illinois that says," • According to state law, it is illegal to speak a foriegn. The officially recognized language is "American".

I thought English was the official language, but when all America is united there should be a dual official language, English/Spanish.
