You can, but you have to use a very small amount, or it will foam out.
You could also try mixing up a jug of regular detergent diluted with a lot of water. That might make the measuring easier when you start the washer.

I wouldn't use regular detergent in a HE washer!! I just purchased one of these washers (LOVE IT-by the way) & it says that my Manufacturers Warranty will be voided if I use reg. detergent in it & something happened to go wrong with it. I went out and bought the HE detergent(from Target) Tide has a couple scents available (go to tide.com for stores that sell it in your area) It works great and you really don't have to use that much in these washers; that's another positive aspect to it. But, I wouldn't take the chance on using the regular; even if your's is not under warranty, if it does break for some reason due to using reg. detergent it could be very expensive to fix. Why take the chance when you can use the HE detergent for the same cost as regular.

All lower water usage washers use to recommend HE detergents. Now they say it's a must!!!! Most grocerys carry more than one brand. Look for an ovel next to the lable indicating HE. HE is for high efficiency.

High efficiency is usually associated with those new "front end loaders".
If you have the "large capacity", it will use less water and a lot less soap, than a regular top loader.
(Basically, all front end washer uses less soap than thier counter part, the top loader, because of more aggitation than the top loaders).
Ok, now, if you have the "stackable" types, that are less capacity than the regular front end loaders, being 2" smaller, and shorter, then you will really use less, as they use less water and soap, because of being a smaller load.
Your instruction manual, (Now ladies, tell me that YOU will read the manual, where a MAN wouldnt ;) LOL!)... will tell you how much soap to use, and if it mentions a "certain high range brand", forget about it, you can use the el-cheapo brand you have been using for years, as it will work just as well.
I wish you well..

I wouldn't use it... read the manual for the washer first! Sometimes it leaves a residue and over time can cause damage. I'd buy the HE kind because it costs just as much as regular and will last you 2 or 3x longer!

you can but you have to use a lot less soap, like say 1/3 of what you use for a regular washer.
