When drafted all players sign an initial contract, some like 1.5 million some only like 300,000 then they usually start in minors. When they get good enough they go to big show. The stars usually fast trac through minor leagues and will get there b4 that initial contract is up. Many guys in AAA though have been playing in minors for a while and do in fact make that 20,-000//40,000 figure. Scott Podsednik was in minors for 9 years. Mark Prior about 4 months if at all. Every team has like 5 or 6 minor teams so basically every team has around 150 players....so many do not make it.

According to a recent lawsuit brought on behalf of former minor league players, AAA players with no prior major league experience and less than seven years of minor league service time typically make $2,150 per month for a five-month season. AAA players with at least one day of major league experience cannot be paid less than $81,500 per season for time spent at AAA in 2014, pursuant to the MLBPA collective bargaining agreement. With seven seasons of minor league experience, players become free agents and presumably sign contracts somewhere between the two numbers set forth above.

Minor league salary info:
A player in is first season is required to have a monthly salary that does not exceed $1,100. After that point, as long as a minor league player is not on the 40-man roster, the salary is open to negotiation.
As players progress through the minor leagues teams usually employ straight scales to determine salaries. For instance, the A's pay $1,100 a month for five months in Single-A, $1,500 for Double-A, $2,150 for Triple-A.
Players on work visas are paid at special rates as mandated by the INS.
All minor leaguers receive a $20 per diem at all levels while on the road.
Minor league players usually are paid about $850 a month in short-season and Rookie leagues, $1,000 a month in low Class A and $1,100 in high Class A. At Double-A, they are paid about $1,500 a mont and in Triple-A, $2,100 a month. A player receives a modest $100-$300 raise if he remains in the same league for a second year. However, minor leaguers receive higher rates of pay once they become eligible for six-year free agency. The minor league free agents make about $10,000 to $15,000 per month in Triple-A. Minor leaguers that have a fair amount of Major League service time command about $100,000-$250,000 annual salaries.
