Could also be, aside from the actual landing impact...how about having a bird slam into your head at 150 mph? A helmet would be smart.

Parachutists wear helmets because when they land on their head travelling 150+ Mph, the helmet keeps all their brains in one, easy to bury package.

It keeps their hair looking good!
I guess any safety precaution could help. I did hear of a man hitting the Ground and Bouncing about 10 feet and he Survived!!!!! Maybe a good helmet did help!

that's only a guess -- to guard their heads from something which will be flying round up in the air, like birds or maybe something yet another skydiver loses in midair? yet another use will be to save their heads warmth at higher altitude -- it receives extremely darned chilly up there...

No, because even if they land succefully they can still hit their head on the ground because it is still a bit fast and unsteady. It is not there just in case your parachute doesnt work, it is there in case you hane a bad landing, which occurs frequently.

many things can go wrong during skydiving- hitting head on plane while jumping out, rough landing, landing without parachute -just protects them.

Because they stand the possibility of being knocked unconscious during their jump and being unable to open their chute.

Conversely, they may be able to deploy their chute, which can jerk back their head an also knock them out.

Remember, if the chute doesn't open, it's not necessarily the fall that will kill you...It's that sudden stop at the end.
