At what age do you not have to worry about SIDS?

SIDS is most common between 2 and 4 months old. It is significantly lower again at 6 months, and the risk is *over* at 12 months old. In fact, the definition of SIDS is the unexplained death of a child less than 12 months old.

And, for your information, when a baby can hold up her/his head, she/he is at a lower risk for *suffocation*, not SIDS. A lot of people--including many doctors--confuse the two, but they are completely different. SIDS is a death from *unexplained* causes. Suffocation is an explanation. It can be detected in an autopsy. It is much less common than SIDS. In the US, for instance, dozens of babies die of suffocation every year while *thousands* die of SIDS.

Experts in this field are starting to classify SIDS as a form of sleep apnea. Most adults and children with this condition have other reflexes that prevent them from suffocating to death but because infants have not fully developed all of their reflexes, its often thought to be an unexplained death.

I have always heard that the first 3 months are statistically higher for SIDS and after the baby can hold her/his head up the stats drop, when the baby call roll over it reduces even more.

most cases of SIDS happens before the baby is 6 months old, so i would say anything after 6 months the chances are extremely low.

Actually, I recently heard of a new type that can affect a child up to 3 years old. As an infant, once your baby can move their head on their own you can stop worrying.

they usually say that risk is lowered after 6 months and extremely low after 1 yr.

just try to prevent it by making sure there are no pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals in your babys crib.

always put your baby to sleep on it's back.

make sure no one smokes in the house.

make sure the baby sleeps in the crib and not in your bed with you or on the couch.

make sure your crib is up to date and the slats are at the recommended width (which i'm not sure what the exact inches are, but you can look it up)

you can also do what i did...go in every hour and feel your baby's tummy to make sure they're still breathing lol (but that's just paranoid me!)

ps...i've heard that breastfeeding also helps reduce the risk.
