Are some ivies better than others for growing in such conditions? Can I get it to grow up a wall without some sort of wire supports?

My problem is getting ivy NOT to grow on the walls! No, you don't need supports. It is self-support with hairy root-like structures on its vines. Check out the site below for LOTS of ivy questions and answers.

You may not want to let your ivy grow on a stucco wall. It supports itself by sending little anchors that drill into the stucco, and this damages the stucco. When you want to paint, there will be absolutely no way to remove the ivy without pulling away those little anchor roots and making holes in the stucco.

If you want to grow ivy next to a stucco wall, you might want to consider using a wood trellis a foot or two away from the wall. Let the ivy anchor itself to the wood, as that will be a lot less expensive to replace the trellis than it would be to repair the stucco.

If it is growing slow or all over the place it might be worth it to trim it up a bit Once it starts getting a little longer, use something to attach it to the wall. If you can put in a nail and wrap it around it. Otherwise Lattis on the brick works well too. Just keep building it up and moving the ivy up. Once it realizes it should climb it will soar

It will ruin your wall.
Put lattice over a cover and have it grow over that.
