Why not skin them alive? or disembowel them?

I mean, what's this thing people have with "beating"?

trappers don't beat seals, trappers don't hunt seals, seal hunters do, and they kill seals to cull the heard. there are too many seals. the seals have depleted the fish stocks and given the few that remain parasites. Its more humane to kill them as young animals than to watch them slowly starve to death. Canadian law used to state that they could only kill as many as they could kill by clubing them over the head. this ensured that most would live, since the ones not caught and clubbed would have a chance to get away and it took time to get out of your boat, walk up to the seal and hit it. Now they are allowed to shoot the seals, ensuring that there will be less pain, if the hunter is a good shot.

They beat them so that there is minimal blood on the pelts, which they sell to make money.

It's disgusting and wrong, but that's the reason.
