Rent started out an adaptation of the opera "La Boheme", but ended up being so much more. It's a story of a group of young people, artists, friends and lovers struggling to live and celebrate life...it deals open and honestly with the scourge of HIV and AIDS as well providing an intimate portrait about poverty, passion, disease in East Village. I'd say it shows how much can change (or stay the same) in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.

I'm pretty sure it's a campaign for finding a cure for aids. Not all the characters are homosexuals, but a majority of them have AIDs (one from drug use I think... needle problem). I think it's supposed to show, also, that just because you have a disease like AIDs doesn't mean you can't live a happy and fulfilled life. Look at Angel.

I've never seen the show and only listened to the soundtrack once but I understand that the musical is based on the opera La Boheme. Doing a bit of research on that opera would further your search for some meaning.

It is one continuous music video with different story plots I hold a bachelors of science in theater and I was not digging that movie...It was a great spectacle as far as the costumes and the makeup and hair, sound and lighting ....but the flow was horrible to each is own

It's hard to narrow something down to one theme. It's about all of those things together and how it is viewed by society. Its about a part of life that no one wants to think and it makes them think about it.
