I want something that stays fairly small w/ smaller leaves. My sister used to have some that I like but we can't remember the name of them. I think it was "Japanese" something or another.

There are many different types of holly that sould do well. I have Compact Inkberry Hollies in front of my house - they're new so I can't tell you how they do in the long term, but so far so good. Annual pruning is supposed to keep them compact and not leggy. They remind me of boxwood (another option for you) but they're not as tight & stiff.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce look nice on the ends of the house, what your sister had might have been japanes yews.

Japanese Yew probably. You can also plant boxwoods or inkberrys.

Japanes Yew maybe.
Indian Hawthorne blooms and is hardy and small.
Mondo Grass is good and a lighter color.
