try bidding on priceline.com
This is good if you don't care what airlines you're flying with and what time you're going/arriving.
If you're a student, try studentuniverse.com
It's a really competitive website, meaning if you're travel on a popular day, you're not gona get a ticket. But if you get one, it's gonna be really cheap.

Umm... I think the question was FROM the Uk and TO the USA ... I would recommend expedia.co.uk or travelocity.co.uk for the lowest mainstream online agencies. You will probably get a better rate if you went to a walk-in agency as they would have access to what's called a consolidator ticket. These are more restrictive as far as refunds or changes but have better rates.
If you are a student, try statravel.co.uk for really good airfares
Also, If you are flying into more than 1 city in the USA, look for a VUSA (Visit USA) Ticket. These will allow you to travel to many places in the USA on one trip for the same cost as a general roundtrip to the East Coast.
