Fish water should never smell "bad." There are different smells that can indicated different occurrances in the water. For example, a "cat pee" smell is indicative that there is too much ammonia build up in your tank. Ammonia is bad for fish. You need to do a 50% water change and monitor your ammonia levels until they disappear (this will include more water changes.)

Water that smells "Fishy" might indicate old waste-filled water or a decaying material. Vaccuum your gravel and do a 30% water change to siphon off some of the wastes.

Because when Adam and Eve were around they were having a lot of sex. After a while Eve started becoming "not so fresh" If you know what I mean. So Adam finally got tired of the smell and demanded she take a bath. Eve went out into the river and cleaned up. The fish have smelled like that ever since.

If fish are in fresh clean water they do not smell. Its only when you take them out of water or don't clean the water that you will get a smell.

If a fish is in a sunny of warm place for a long peirod of time, alge can form. This stinks a lot. A fish has to get rid of waste to so that adds to the affect. A lot of carbon dioxide is going into the water from a fishs' gills so that adds even more stink.

The same reason why you smell when you live on land; they don't clean themselves and you smell when you don't clean yourself.
