I think it's a great game because it stimulates your imagination. However, it is hard to find people to play the original game (and even harder to find a good Dungeonmaster).
It's only creepy if you create chain mail armor out of soda can tops, call yourself "Cargash the Warrior" and when your boss asks you to do some work, you threaten him with your +2 long sword.

Playing D&D is creepy only if the people playing it are creepy. I have met creepy D&D players, and I have met very cool D&D players. Just like I have met creepy motorcycle aficianados, and cool ones. It's not the pastime itself, necessarily.
Tho it is true that D&D does tend to attract the more introverted personalities (I should know, I'm one myself). It does not "make you" introverted, as one person asserted. Rather, it is an opportunity for an introverted person to get some form of social interaction. Like from "The Breakfast Club:" "OK, that's social, I guess. Pathetic, and sad, but social." OK so he was referring to Chess Club, but the joke is still funny either way.
Anyways, D&D is a good game, but I agree with the poster who said it is hard to find a good group of players and even harder to find a good referee/ DM / storyteller. There are creepy D&D players, true; but there are plenty of cool ones too, just keep looking.

The Creepy part comes from the people who don't stop playing the game, long after everybody else has.
I remember the Vampire craze, I seen some many people believe they were a real vampire. Scary
Then I met some people who talked about themselves in third person, and insisted they were who their character was.
If I had a dime for every, "Dude, we stopped playing hours ago"

Playing D&D is not creepy at all. As long as you have a real life (education/career/friends/a lover, etc…), who care if you like to have a fantasy life as well? It’s no different then reading very engaging book. If people don’t get it, it’s mostly because they lack imagination.
If, however, you are a fat 45-year-old virgin, living in your mother’s basement and resemble either one of the two guys from the Fear of Girls video, then yes, it is creepy.

D & D is a great way to use your imagination and focus on problem solving skills. The great thing about it is the unpredictability and endless nature of it (assuming you have a good DM).
The main thing is to pay attention to how people play, and ask yourself why...you may learn a lot.
Just remember it is only a game, but games are meant to sharpen your skills...don't take it too seriously.
