Kashmir passed from the control of the Durrani Empire of Afghanistan and centuries of Muslim rule under the Mughals, Persians, and Afghans to the conquering Sikh armies by the mid-19th century. During the latter part of the 19th century, Kashmir was ruled by the Dogras, who are a predominantly Hindu people in the area around Jammu and who were installed as rulers by the Sikhs (see Ranjit Singh). In 1819, 30,000 soldiers of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore attacked and annexed Kashmir as a part of Ranjit Singh's empire. In 1846, the British rulers sold Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh by the Treaty of Amritsar. The Maharaja declared himself as the King of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the partition of India and Pakistan, Pakistani tribal Pashtuns attacked and annexed some portions of Kashmir. To save kashmir its king asked the help of India and an instrument of accession was signed between the Maharaja and the Indian Union. But unfortunately the accession of Kashmir became a flash point between Pakistan and India and the United Nations had to intervene. A UN resolution was adopted wherein it was decided that the people of Kashmir would be given a chance to decide for their political future by way of a plebescite. India and Pakistan are presently in conflict resolution mode as the pro freedom insurgency in Kashmir has been going for the last two decades. At least a hundred thousand people have been killed in Kashmir. Kashmir is a valley whose beauty has been proclaimed by many and stretches out at about 7,200 square kilometers (2,800 square miles) at an elevation of 1,675 meters (5,500 feet). A Mughal ruler Jehangir, who built the famed Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir, made the statement, " If heaven be on this earth, it must be here." Kashmir was once called the Switzerland of the east. It has a very ancient history and it was for a long time one of the centers of Hindu philosophical, literary and religious culture, a tradition still maintained by the native Hindu population. Kashmiri literature, sculpture, music, dance, painting, and architecture have had a profound influence in Asia.

Hear the answer from an INDIAN. Kashmir was an idependent state before 1947 and under British rule this rule extended over whole India Pakistan Bangladesh whene they got independence in 1947 15 aug all the states were divided according to majority of muslims and hindus religions then Kashmir came to us even though it was a Mulim state but the then King came to India because it liked India becuse its constitution said it a Secular country where all religions had its equal right.
The Pakis cant digest and began to infiltrate in India and began proxy war to get rule over Kashmir the main reseaon is that the other part of pakis is a barren land low production and bad weather but if they get Kashmir the heaven on this world they can be king so the use violence to get it and makes the innocent lads to kill people and get killed in name of fucky zihad. Think this Kashmir is INDIA"S integral part it cant be divided any how by war or soccer match it is ours and we will give our blood to keep it ours.BYE

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the Indian Republic. In 1947, when the British were leaving India after their successful implementation of 'DIVIDE AND RULE' policy and thsus creating two states - INDIA & PAKISTAN out of one nation. at that point in time, India had small kings all over the country which were given the power to either remain with the Indian dominion or remain free. But the Iron Man of India, Sardar Patel, took the task to unify all the free kingdoms under one country-INDIA. and the task was almost completed by 1948 with an exception of three states - Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad and Junagadh. By early 1948, the state of Junagadh was a part of Indian Dominion as military action was taken by the Indian Forces and the ruler of Junagadh surrendered and signed a pact with India. During the same time, Pakistan Government sent local tribal with their forces to carry out invasion of Jammu and Kashmir. Seeing this, the weak ruler of Kashmir at that time, Dr. Hari Singh asked India to help him and in accordance he signed a pact with India that he agrees to be a part of the Indian Dominion. Then, the then Indian Government headed by the first prime minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru (who conceptualised Non- Alignment Movement or NAM later) fought with the Local Tribes and the battle was seized by UN Ceasefire in september 1948. The part that was left with the Local Tribes then is now called POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir) and the line separating the POK and the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J and K) is called the Line of Control. Pakistan has fought four battles with India (1948, 1965, 1971 and 1999) in order to claim Kashmir. But it lost all the four battles. And the people of Kashmir have voted with an overwhelming response to the democratic rule in the Indian part of the state to elect the representatives to their State Assembly and the Parliament of India. Whereas there is not even a single representative from POK in the Pakistan Assembly and the members of the POK Assembly are chosen by the military government of Pakistan not by the people. In all there is no democracy but Autocracy in POK.
In the latest buzz, According to various surveys made by various International Agencies 70% of the people of J and K want to live with the Indian Dominion , whereas 24% want to be with Pakistand and 6% are OK with either.
