I'm moving back to England after 15 years in USA? Is England in good shape? I hear so much about the degradation of living, violence and crime. Is this an exageration? (BTW, I heard the same thing about America when I moved there) Thnx

England is ace. The best sense of humour in the entire world.
And our women have the best as**s.
The weathers pretty rubbish though-but at least it gives you something to talk about at bus stops with old people.

Like all countries it depends where you go. However the government is encouraging urban regeneration schemes. If you live in the south you will have very high council tax as most government subsidies go up north, to the labour homelands. If you buy a house try and buy something as small as possible because the difference between bands is £100+ (depending on region). Crime is a problem, but it is just iolent crime that has increased (but not very much, mainly because of armed robberies). The real problem is Speed Cameras, wherever you go you will be watched, the leniency limit on speed is very low. Still a great country witha wonderful mix of nationalities (except for places like Bradford, where the race riots now occur between africans and asians).

England is going downhill fast.Gambling, boozing & prostitution are all on the increase.Crime is out of control & the police now rank alongside the best in Somalia or Haiti.A huge number of the indigenous population leave England each year & this trend looks set to continue. The vast majority of my neighbours are non british & this trend is also set to continue. The current government are the most incompetent in living memory & dodgy dealings i.e.corruption is the staple diet.Returning would be a mistake.

like every country it has its good and bad points. crime is getting worse and 'lack of respect' is a problem in most areas. violence is not anywhere near as bad as the US. england is a very expensive place to live though, petrol is $8 a gallon! And there are a huge amount of taxes to pay...on everything. The climate is improving and standards of service have never been better for this country.

Except for in a few individual areas in large cities most people in are extremely unlikely to encounter violence of the type that makes headlines.

Ignore the inevitable answers about immigrants, assylum seekers and chavs. Despite the cost of living (too high) and the housing shortage (there's always been one) it can still be a great place to live.

England is just as vile as the USA. If you must move to the UK then move to Scotland. For the best place possible, move to Singapore!

i suppose it depends where you are going to live. The UK has rough areas, just as does every other country in the world, but its still a fab place to be, especially if you live in the Yorkshire countryside like me!! We still have Walkers crisps and Warburtons bread if that helps...

nothing changes.
the tories were corrupt in the 80s. labour are corrupt now.
the trains still dont run on time.
it still rains a lot.
nhs is still underfunded and its mangment is still over staffed.
most of the miners still havent found work.
our sence of humor still kicks *** and richard and judy are still on telly.

oh one big change. we lost the right to trial by jury, to silence and to protest in plaiment square.
