I've had an abnormal pap for a few months ,but I keep putting off my colposcopy because everyone says it hurts so bad. does it really hurt that bad? my friend is prescribed to Valium and said she would give me one before my appointment, would that be safe?

I had a colposcopy about 3 years ago...followed by a LEEP, followed by a cone biopsy, and I remember that the colposcopy was not half as bad as I thought it would be. You'll be fine; don't take the valium--you won't need it. You'll just need to dose up on some Tylenol afterwards and take the rest of the day to rest. Don't put it off anymore! If there's anything wrong (let's hope that's not the case!), it's better to deal with it systematically and head-on to make sure that you stay healthy.
Good luck! I promise you that nothing will be as bad as the fear of the unknown.

I have had a colposcopy, it was a bit uncomfortable, the doctor said it would be like a really, really bad menstrual cramp and it was! It only lasted a second or two as she took the biopsies and then it stopped immediately. I had some discharge afterwards, but nothing major. Luckily the results were fine, I just had some kind of infection that gave me a faulty pap result.

First of all don't keep putting it off. You could be at risk for cervical cancer. Secondly, do not take any medications that are not prescribed to you.
I just recently had a colposcopy a few months ago. My doctor walked me through the whole procedure and told me what to expect beforehand. He said that most women notice a little pinch or a little cramping. I can honestly say that I felt virtually nothing at all and certainly didn't need any kind of pain killer or muscle relaxer. The doctor will go as quickly as he/she can and make it as painless as possible.
Just remember, even if it does hurt a little it's worth knowing whether or not you're at risk for diseases like cervical cancer.

I don't know if it hurts very badly, you should maybe talk to your doctor about that. I have heard from my sister though that it does hurt a little, but I mean you have to remember what is being done, I'm sure it will not be the most pleasant procedure around. As far as the medicine, when you call you doctor to set up the appointment ask them if it would be safe for you to take one in the fact that you are a little nervous, or best suggestion, don't take other peoples medicine, when you call ask your doctor what she suggest you take and if she can write you a prescription for it. Good Luck!
Curious though I saw other peoples answers are you refering to a colonoscopy or are you talking about something else, because if you are talking about a colonoscopy that is a completely different ball game?

Its hard not to listen to your friends, but dont. I've had two and its not painful at all, a little pressure or cramping but no big deal. Take a few Tylenol 30 minutes prior and you should be fine. Dont put off the test, an abnormal pap is something you should take care of.

It does not hurt . You will feel a slight pich when they do the biopsy. The best thing to do during the procedure is to take deep breaths and exhale. I would advise against taking the valium from your friend, instead contact your obgyn and request something from them. Taking medications that are prescribed for someone else, is extremely dangerous,

It all depends on your pain level. I've had some people say that it was really painful and others tell me it was just like a bad period cramp. DO NOT take your friend's Valium without first discussing it with your Dr.

I had one about a year ago and it was not as bad as I feared!! The doctor numbs the area first.Do not take someone else's meds!!! Do talk to your gyno about pain meds such as ibuprofen.
Do not put it off, bring a friend for moral support, and it only takes about 20 minutes!! :)

You will be ok...it's just like having a really bad period with bad cramps. Good luck.-- they did not go up my butt...thats something else.

Yeah take the valium. I have heard that they give you meds so you don't remember any of it. You know they go up your butt right?
