Dukes were the highest rank of hereditary nobility below an Emperor, King, or Prince. They had full rights to administer high, middle, and low justice, sit in judgment, levy taxes, rape and murder peasants, and bleed their people dry so they could live in luxury. Under the Christian law of primogeniture you became a Duke by being the first born son of a Duke. That made you a Landed Duke, since the title came with the land. You could also become a Duke through a grant of title from you Monarch, this made you a Court Duke since your title and lands were a grant, and could be revoked at any time for any reason. This system is still reflected in the U.K. by the fact that the first born son and heir is created a Prince (the Prince of Wales), and second born son is created a Duke (the Duke of Cornwall)
