A bit is a one or a zero, so decide on a convention such as "Heads is 1 and tails is 0" then flip a coin.

If you need to produce a random bit in some other fashion, you will need to provide more details about your problem.

You can use a linear feedback shift register. The autocorrelation function is nearly a delta function, i.e. each bit in the sequence is essentially indepent of all the other bits.

If you have M-length shift register, the prob. of a '1' is 2^(M-1)/(2^M - 1). So by picking the appropriate M you get pretty close to 50%.
