Brad Pitt's character Tyler Durden isn't real. He is a made up character by the mind of Edward Norton. Basically, it's the other side of his personality. The side that doesn't live by social norms, defies the law and creates the fight clubs.

Further and further into the film, Edward Norton starts to act more and more like "Tyler Durden" and sooner or later they merge into one personality. Edward Norton then realizes that it was really himself all along creating all the fight clubs and the mayhem clubs, having relations with Marla Singer. See? It was him all along.

Since they have answered well already this is
to answer an anwer somewhere above me.

Ed nortons character doesnt have a name, possibly to reinforce his unimportance in life, but the book suggests he could be called joe when he often refers to himself as joe in connection to the magazines "i am joes inflamed colon" "i am joes complete lack of surprise", in the films they use the name jack. Though he is never propery named.

Tyler Durden is an alter ego, unbeknownst to Ed Norton's character (who is never named).

He's schizophrenic you dumbass. Split personalities. Brad Pitt isn't real he is a figment of dude's imagination. Much like your IQ. That also does not exist.

Also at the end when Ed Norton's character (I can't for the life of me remember his name) tries to kill himself and fails, Tyler Durden "believes" he's been killed and dies. Ed Norton's character honestly tries to kill himself and in effect tricks Durden into dying.
