Sound is a sense. The tree's fall causes vibrations, but, unless something is around to interpret those vibrations as sound, it is never "heard."

If a tree falls in a forest with nobody around, does anyone care??

OK. In physics, sound is a wave. It's caused by something vibrating. In the case of a tree, once it hits the ground it causes the ground to vibrate and hence producing a sound. So unless the tree doesn't hit the ground, it will make a sound depite the fact that there will be no one around to hear that sound. After all sounds dont's exist for the sole purpose of you hearing them.

what gets me about this question is how does the tree know if there is anybody around or not. As far as i am aware a tree doesnt have eyes so will have no idea whether anybody is in close proximity. therefore how does it decide whether to keep quiet or not...tricky.

What becuz no ones around, the tree suddenly stops obeying the laws of physics?

heck no!

If that were true, gold would materialize when I close my eyes, and be there for me to pick up when I open them.

This is one of those really old questions. My grandfather use to ask this and my answer was always Yes. And he would respond.....You are assuming it will because that is what you were taught. When you assume you make an **** out of yourself. So i am assuming all the way and I still say yes :)

I forget why, but my physics teacher said that in fact, it does NOT make a sound. I was so frustrated with his reasoning though :( To get a "real" answer, you should e-mail a physics person or something. Good luck.

Yes. Even thought there will be no one to hear it, it will make a noise. Especially when it lands on a chipmunk and the chipmunk cries and squeals.
