I would vote to keep it legal. Prohibition didn't work, neither would banning tobacco.

Well, just on that issue, I think ideally it would be a good idea but practically it would go down. Remember Prohibition? How well did that work? Outlawing tobacco would produce the same results, simply because there's no way to enforce such a wide-reaching law. Plus, remember - people smoke because it's an ADDICTION. Do you really think a law would stop a drug addict?
Of course, all of that said, smoking kills... Practicality, however, must be considered.
To the person before me, I say - it is most definitely NOT only the smoker's problem! It's true that it's his/her fault for starting to smoke, BUT it does not only affect the smoker! Haven't you heard of secondhand smoke? This is why smoking is so inconsiderate to the community - it affects everyone, not just those who make a bad choice.

I would vote against tobacco being made an illegal substance. It provides millions of people with pleasure as does alcohol. Its benefits in terms of relieving stress are sorely overlooked and considering that more than 80% of illnesses are stress related it makes one wonder what the big anti smoking hype is all about. Is it actually for better or for worse?

I wouldn't vote to make tobacco illegal, however, i would like to see a Federal law for public smoking. A Federal public smoking ban will decrease how often people smoke, making it less of a need and possibly make it easier for people who want to quit. I also believe that public and indoor smoking bans will decrease the amount of cancer and other illnesses caused by second had smoke.

it will never come to a vote. Although looked down upon in this country, the tobacco companies are doing great business in Asia. Marlboro and Coca Cola are recognized trademarks all over the world.

ugh, let me guess... you look angrily at people smoking in public because 2nd hand smoke is harmful... and then you get into an SUV and choke us all to death...
no substance should be illlegal... everyone's rights stop where other people's rights start... i can do what i want to myself... so long as i don't infringe on your right to clean air... so how about this deal... you stop driving your SUV, and I'll stop smoking in public....

I agree with the first answer -- it wouldn't work, and it's been pretty effective just to bump up the tax price until it's ridiculously out of people's grasp.

i would say keep it legal, but don't sue because you get sick from smoking, that is BS, if you smoke and have trouble breathing, then hmmmm, that's your problem!!!! it's like doing drugs and getting sick from them, it's your choice and your consequences
