I just recently found out from a survey online that almost 40% of African-Americans in the US of of partial Navtive American descent. I told my friend this(who happens to be black) and she said that her great grandmother was Navtive American (Cheyenne).
I found that really amazing because i had just assumed that all African-Americans were of full African descent. But then of course,if you were born in America, your bound to be mixed with a couple of things.
Comments. . . . ?

I think this is especially common in the Southern U.S., where it was very common for those of African and American Indian heritage to band together, because they were both racially discriminated against. I am white and I have both African and Cherokee ancestors. I would be curious to know how many Americans of ANY race have native ancestry.

There are so many different races in the U.S. Thats why they call it a melting pot. The majority of us have some sort of mix regardless of what we believe. That's why I get so upset when it comes to rascism. We should all be united. Then we wonder why other countries hate us so much.

I am 1/2 Mexican/American (but I have native american in my blood) and I'm 1/2 Puerto Rican (but my grandmother on my puerto rican side is Spanish) therefore I am really a mix of a whole lot of things. But that's how we all are.

I am not aware of this, most native Americans hated Africans. I may believe 4% but not 40. If there is entitlement involved, the numbers can inflate. It is suspect at least.

It's just what people call things, Native Americans used to be called Red Indians, but they weren't even Indians.

If that was true (which is probably is) and if each one could prove it, they could claim their native american heritage and we wouldn't have as many racial problems as we do.
For all of you out there that have any bit of native american blood, embrace who you are and stop the racism! We are all american!

Blacks and Indians were often herded together, slaved together or conscripted together into the founding and revolutionary period of the U.S., so I can beleive it, but the number is higher than I would have thought.
