I have a cleanable air cleaner and I clean it at every oil change. A vital part of the internal combustion engine is oxygen. Letting your air cleaner get gummed up with 6 years of grim is literally strangling your engine. I would replace an air cleaner every two or three oil changes (which should occur about every 3000 miles or so I don't care what the manual may say) or buy one from a company like K&N that is cleanable and clean it every oil change.

For starters, you are lucky that you haven't had engine problems. Driving with a plugged 6 year old air filter is like playing Russian roulette with your fuel delivery system. I'd run a bottle or two of injector cleaner through your fuel system...the dirt and crud that's been getting mixed with the fuel for 6 years has likely begun to foul the injectors.
Air filters should be changed once a year, more if you are in a particularly dusty area. You aren't dreaming...now that your car is getting clean air, it's performing better, has more power, and will get better gas mileage.
Hope this helped.

No you are not dreaming, changing the air filter in your car's engine allows more air to get into the system allowing the fuel/air mix to burn more cleanly and more efficiently there by giving you more power, and increasing your gas mileage. Question: why did you wait 6 years to change it, the air filter should be changed at least once a year if not more.

you are NOT dreaming. Having restricted airflow keeps your engine running at a higher temperature which causes it to overheat and eventually burning out your radiator. You did a very good thing by changing your filter. You should try to change it every year, unless if you have a K and N airfilter. THose you can just wash out and reuse. Makes ALL the difference in the world.

yeah, it would be more powerful because the better the air flow, the more powerful it is! It was probably caked with dirt and not as much air was getting in. That's why they make intake, headers, cat converters & exhaust - to increase airflow.

it's an air filter. think about that? ok so it filters air and you engine needs alot of air with the fuel for proper combustion. so after one yr your suppose to get a new air filter....lol yours must have been nasty. changed the pcv valve and oil now...lol.

the engine is getting more air now so there will be more power output. it should have been changed a long time ago.

Are you joking?? Of course if you haven't changed it in 6 years!
You should also get a pleasant surprise with you increased mileage.

6 years was way overdue, try breathing through a thick blanket and then take it away....you'll feel a lot better too
