Because it "looks" easy and effortless. In other words, people just don't understand because they've never tried it. On the outside people don't see the bloody toes and the muscle cramps.

The only people who think ballet is a sissy sport are the ones who don't do it. I'll bet you are stronger than most people you know -- and more lithe and limber too. I've seen a lot of guys on the beach who are all pumped up from lifting weights but are so musclebound they can hardly tie their own shoes. I think the training given ballet dancers is not only the best physical training, but gives the most aesthetically pleasing results as well.

I don't think people in general think ballet is sissy. But, I would be willing to bet that most people would mock someone who calls ballet a sport. It's not. Ballet is an art form. Football is a sport.

People think ballet is a "sissy sport" because it is more of a beautiful art than a competition. Ballet is a very hard and dangerous activity, many professional ballerinas have had major injuries from pushing themselves to hard for ballet. People don't consider ballet to be a sport, because we have been taught that sports are rough activities, such as football, not more poetic, flowing activities like ballet.

As others have mentioned, ballet is generally considered a performing art rather than a sport. That is, ballet is not about competition, it is about expression. And expression is something that a lot of guys don't like to show.

People tease at what they do not understand. Many people here have said it's not a sport. I believe it is both a sport and form of artistic expression. It takes much work to even perfect the moves. All that matters is if the person enjoys it, not what others think of it.

It's not necessarily a sport, no. As was said, it's more an art form. A means of expressing oneself phsyically, if you will. As for the sissy part, I can understand it if it's in terms of guys doing it, since there's that whole macho image of guys. But not for girls.

I think it's because people don't appreciate real, authentic, aristocratic art anymore and because they don't have a ***idea about how hard and painful and annoying it can get. Due to parodies also there came a negative image- it is not about the pink things and the tutu's, they obviously have never seen all the colours and models leotards and so can have- a pitty for them!

People that say that do not realize the amount of training and conditioning it takes to participate in ballet.
Never listen to the words of someone who has never tried it.

Because these people are incapable of doing it, so in frustration they make a stuid comment like that. They also don't realize how many football players and boxers have practiced ballet for years!
