With the continually rising price of fuel these days, I was wondering if there was a more pertinent feature than good gas mileage for a vehicle you might purchase.

That all depends on your income status and the level of "enviromently friendly subconcious decicions" you make.

Most people on a tighter budget will sacrifice a little more at the dealership to buy a hybrid or fully electric car. In the long run it pays for itself.

Others who are more well endowed with money can afford to buy todays gas guzzlers. It all depends on the income of a person and their personality.

Hope that helps.

Yes. I hope people buying H2s and Chevy Suburbans and Toyota Sequias and Nissan Armada pay the price for the environmental impact they are making.
I feel guilty even for not selling off my minivan that gives 19 mpgs but I don't have a choice. Soon enough though!

My next car will definitely be a Hybrid. I know they will cost more but I would give more money to the Japs than those Barbaric Saudi Bastards!

Among the fuel consumption, reliability, cost of maintenance and insurance cost are important factors too. They all add up to the total cost of ownership. And for a casual driver fuel cost might be a minor contributorto the total cost.
But as always happens you fell in love with the car, push the limits of your buying power and ignore all the other costs to own it.

I live in the metro Detroit area, car lots are overflowing in nearby mall lots, into empty fields down the road from dealerships. People find the car they want, gas prices are high, car prices are higher, especially here in this area. Features in a car account for looks only, and there are not many choices.

Most car buyers are looking for much more than just fuel economy. They are looking for usability, options (such as all wheel drive), power, styling, color and safety. Fuel economy seems to drive more carbuyers today to buy economy cars then ever but they also want a more comfortable seat, A/C and enough room to put a carseat or a golfbag.

I don't know either. Although I know when I was looking for a vehicle gas mileage was a very important factor for me.

That counts, but so does insurance rates. You have to look at the total cost of owning a vehicle...not just the loan payment.
