I have a new DVD-R for my system and I need a good FREE conversion tool to convert my video files to DVD format so that I can burn them and watch them. Also, I would like to take home VHS movies, put them on my system, edit them, possibly soundtrack them, and convert them to DVD as well. Im willing to pay a reasonable price for the software for the home movies. What is reccomended and how is VHS to DVD conversion done. Any links you can give me would be great! Thanks in advance!

You need a video capture hardware capability for your PC. Software alone won't help.

If you bought a PC with video in, then you may already have the software needed.

If your PC doesn't have video capture hardware built-in, then you'll need to get either a PCI video capture card or a USB video capture device. These cards usually (but not necessarily always) have the complete software required to capture video and record it to DVD.
