"Why?" is one of the best questions that any human being can ask. It is also the one question that most people as they get older ask less and less and less. Ask "Why?". Then follow it up with other questions. We live in a very complicated world that needs our understanding and intelligent participation...and that isn't going to happen if we don't ask questions.
The one exception when asking "Why?" grows quite tiresome is when children are at that stage of babble when they may ask "Why?" thirty or more times in a row, not because they really care about the answer, but just because they like the interaction with others.

To me, "why" always implies blame or fault. It also makes me wonder if the person asking is truly questioning something or that they are trying to avoid doing whatever has been asked of them. I also think that when someone asks "why" , that maybe I haven't been clear in my information or instructions.
When my children were younger, I always used to say that if I had a nickle for everytime I heard "why" I'd be able to hire a nanny for my kids.

I tend to look for a logical reason for what ever the Why? is in response too, but when it comes to my kids and telling them to clean up their room and when they go "why" the only thing I can think of to say back is "is because I said so!" how lame is that!

I hear a person disagreeing with your response, but at the same time wanting to learn more about the reason behind your answer.

Someone not happy with the situation or a previous statement/answer, and asking for more information to be convinced.

Whenever I hear that word, I want to run and scream. Like on tests.. when it asks a question, I know it, I'm like sweet... but I continue on, and I see "why?" or "explain".. and I want to shoot myself. Even though I ask it a lot, I can't stand that being asked to me.

Why? It is a good question, without actually focusing thought. Unless, of course, it is asked in a context as in, "Please clean up your room." "Why?"
Generally it is because we as humans as why, that we know the things we do. There is also the question, "How can I package this and make a profit?"

If it's asked without reference to a topic, I generally think, "oh how cute, a freshman philosophy major."

I think of my mom saying "Because I said so that's why"
I think of any reason I can come up with to give a reasonable response.
