Don't get me wrong, I love my nation, but I grow weary of the daily commute, dealing with office politics, putting up with ever increasing municipal taxes, etc. While I'm really tempted to give up on the rat race and try my hand at being more self sufficient in the country, there's always the concern if I will be able to provide well enough for myself and dependents.

It's become more than a little ridiculous, hasn't it?

Unfortunately, the only thing the people in government, academia, and management have to say about this is that we need to be even more competitive.

Honestly, I'm not overly worried about that happening, I'm worried about what will happen when people finally get so sick of this stuff that they do something about it.

You can try being a sustenance farmer, but I'd look into it before taking the plunge. I've been told that independent farmers are having a lot of trouble staying out of debt.

I feel ya! I live a simple life, I am single, and I work an 8-5 M-F, but I wish I had more time to do things I want to do rather than always being at work. I feel like I work so hard and have nothing to show for it...If I could have my way I would move to an island and live off the land.

Well, can't say about that because I'm a student now.
But I think I may get bored of it pretty soon.
I got the feeling of working from 8am to 5pm when I applied for a part-time job: it made me sick dude -_-''.
So, I think I'll get bored to the rat race somehow.

Why don't you try investing?
If you are good enough you can avoid, for sure, office politics. I mean by trading at home or just go chit chatting with investors at trading room. ;)

I have done all I can to avoid falling into the trap of modern society. Truth be told, at 18, I am rather scared knowing I may be swept up in it against my will. I have been looking at ways to be self sufficient, the major problem I see is dependents, but, maybe you can't allow that to be a problem, because you are trying to better your SELF... and you cannot allow them to get in the way of it.... at least that is how I look at it.

If you have kids, you have to put them first. They don't need lots of stuff. They will be much happier if Dad is home more often. Move to a cheaper part of the country, downsize, enjoy the simple things in life. You only get one life, spend as much as you can of it with your family and the people you love. Who needs a fancy swimming pool, their are beautiful rivers. Wouldn't your wife be happier if you were around more?
