It may be that the stress of producing young is enough to do her in; cuttlefish are not exactly the most hardy critters. Typically, most species only live about year or so, anyway, so they only go through a single breeding season before dying.

According to the amateur breeder/enthusiast listed below, females can lay several clutches of eggs, and can live for months after egg laying.

I have heard several versions of this story, I have hear that they do die and they dont........? If they do die after breeding then they are simply trying to increase their fitness. When I say fitness, I dont mean muscles and exercise. I mean offspring produced. Every living organism on the planet has one basic goal....reproduce and get as much of their genetic material out into the world as they can. For cuddle fish, who arent necessarily the highest critters on the food chain, it is important to produce as much offspring as possible. Most ceohalopods can store energy, but when its a question of fitness, they would rather divert that energy into reproductive effort and increase output. So the simple answer.........fitness........the more offspring you can produce, the better and if it means self sacrifice, then so be it..... examples of this happen all over the animal kingdom. Being an entomologist, many people say.. how to worker bees and ant increase their fitness be never breeding........well, by defending the nest and protecting others, they are actually protecting their sisters, who share 50% similarity in DNA, thus increasing the worker's fitness. So this self sacrifice is quite common. I hope that answers your question!

I don't know too much about fish, but my knowledge of other species would lead me to believe that these specific fish use most of their energy in production of their eggs, and travelling to get them to where they need to be layed. I would guess their bodies don't store enough energy to survive much longer than needed to allow them to reproduce... hope this helps!
