So if the drivers scrape the wall, they aren't sitting right next to it. It gives them a little safety buffer.

One reason is to take advantage of the driver's weight. When turning left on a bicycle or motorcycle, you lean to the left don't you? It helps offset the centrifugal forces that take affect when turning. Turning left and utilizing the weight of the driver is a way of sort-of leaning into the turn.
Another reason is that the driver gets a better view of the road ahead of him. When you turn to the right, you have to look over the hood of the car. Turning left, you can litterally see the road right outside your window.
I'm sure there are many other reasons, but racing small dirt tracks has made me very aware of these two reasons.

Because Americans are used to seeing things moving from left to right, just the same as writing and reading.

The main reason is because of the left side weight distribution with American cars being left hand drive.
