The trick to not having your diamonds look cheap is to pick the right setting. Try to go with simple, classic looks - like a simple solitaire, or elegant teardrop shaped stones bezel set (for earrings i think that looks great).
Don't overdo it with too many stones, and too large a stone. If you want many stones, then pick small ones set in a shape. It's harder to see the flaws in small stones.
