Body hair is a definitive factor in mammalian description. As pertaining to hair on the gluteus maximus, it could be a remnant of ancestors who were once completely covered in hair, or there could be a more practical reason, such as heat retention or another form of sensing "feel" in an area that has less nervous connections that most other body regions.
Since I am not an expert by any means though, this is purely speculation.
