The mind is a real thing. It has substance. It is substance. The mind is listed among the elements of creation. It is part of the subtle body, consisting of mind, inteligence and false ego. The mind is separated material energy of the Lord. This is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita Chapter 7, verse 4. (see asitis.com)
The function of the mind is two-fold - to accept and to reject. The mind is the central of all senses. It is the sense within. The mind gets information of the outer world through the 5 knowledge acquiring senses, namely - eyes, nose, ears, tongue and skin. He accepts things that are considered pleasurable for the senses and rejects things that are considered unpleasurable.
The mind moves according to our desires. It is situated within the heart. This is simple schema of the mind, but it is a much more complex reality when it comes to every individual.
The mind can be our best friend or our worst enemy. Humans are meant to learn how to control their minds. The mind is difficult to control. It is possible through suitable practice and detachment. The process for controlling the mind is called yoga.
I hope this gives you an idea about the mind.

Speculation: it's the "epiphenomenon" of conscious awareness created by the neural complexity of the brain. It's the "software" correlate of the "hardware" called the brain ... except that this "software" has essentially built itself up through interaction with the world and other consciousnesses (animals, including other people). Quite possibly, when "A.I." systems are sufficiently complex, they will cross a threshold level of awareness and effectively become emergent minds. It will be a different world, then! The mind is the watcher that asks "what 'watcher' is that?" ;)

The mind: The only thing you truly own and control...
Classically, the mind is regarded as a by-product of the brain...
However, I know my mind to be a vast, intricate construct entirely independant of my brain...
I am comprised of more than memories, personality, logic and emotion.
My mind extends far beyond the reaches of my skull, and is an intregral part of the mechanics of this universe.
My brain serves only as an antenna
or perhaps a way-station for my roving spirit

The mind is the center of self-reflection and higher thought.
I don't know for sure where it is, but I'd guess the frontal lobe. (based on phineas gage.)
I don't know much about the mind except that it is perhaps the defining characteristic of humans. In psychology and science, the mind is such an elusive entity that it is often simply referred to as "the hard question".

Mind is the machine that we use to solve problems. It's abstractly located in the brain. I know that it can be manipulated because it's processes are fluid and dependent on many variables

That which is responsible for one's thoughts and feelings; the seat of the faculty of reason.
All I know is - It is like a processor plus programs plus a hard disk and a RAM. Basically, it works like a computer.
